Your treatment journey

Treatment at INTCLS is based on the method Håkan Brorson has developed over more than 30 years, since 1993: (an operation that removes fat through small cuts using thin tubes) of the swollen arm or leg, followed by (regularly adjusted pressure from garments, with measurements to keep swelling down) for life.31 It may suit you if you have (lymphoedema that has been present for a long time and does not go away) and the swelling is mainly fatty tissue. With (no dent remains in the skin when you press on the swelling), little or no dent remains when you press with your thumb. (treatment without surgery, such as compression, skin care and exercise), such as (pressure from bandages or special garments that helps keep swelling down) and (gentle massage that helps lymph fluid move), must first have been tried and no longer be enough.232

Your treatment journey, step by step

This is an overview of the published method. The treatment journey at INTCLS needs confirmation from Håkan Brorson. Your plan is adapted after a medical assessment.

What does the research show?

In the follow-up of 105 women with (lymphoedema in the arm) after breast cancer, (the extra volume compared with the unaffected arm or leg) was completely reduced after 6 months. The reduction lasted at 5 years and averaged over 100 %. This means the treated arm was on average slightly smaller than the unaffected arm, not that the whole arm disappeared.23 A separate arm study found a marked fall in (bacterial skin infections that cause redness, fever and swelling).25 These results apply to selected patients using lifelong and are not a guarantee for each person.

Could treatment suit me?

Often suitable

with , where swelling is mainly fat and is not enough. An individual assessment is needed.23

Less often suitable

When swelling is mainly fluid and shows (a dent remains in the skin when you press on the swelling), is usually the first choice. (lymphovenous anastomosis, connecting lymph vessels to small veins to give lymph a new route) or (moving healthy lymph nodes to the swollen body part) may be options for some patients.21516

Not suitable for surgery now

Active cancer, open wounds or an ongoing infection must first be addressed. Treatment is not suitable if you cannot or do not wish to use lifelong .23
